Robert George Cheney, 83, of Dover and formerly of California, passed away on November 7, 2022, with his loving wife of 60 years by his side, following several years of declining health.

Born in Northampton, MA on July 27, 1939, he was the son of the late Paul E. and Jane M. (Mientka) Cheney.

After graduating from Amherst High School in 1958, Robert went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force. While in the service in California, Norma Marsh caught his attention at the Dream Bowl while he was spending an evening out with other service men. That evening began a lifelong commitment of love and devotion to one another. On February 4, 1962, they were united in marriage in Norma’s parent’s home in Vallejo, California.

Robert’s professional career spanned more than 30 years with the Safeway Grocery Store in California where he served as the head clerk. Additionally, Robert’s life was filled with beautiful memories alongside his family. He also was an avid golfer, gardener, and woodworker.

Robert will be deeply missed by his wife, Norma; his children, Pamela Jean (Steve) Douglass of New Philadelphia and Alan Todd (Julie) Cheney – Midlothian, Virginia; his grandson, Jason Paul (Macy) Douglass of Navarre; great-grandchildren, Makayla and Janie Douglass; siblings, Donald (Clare) Cheney of MA and Denise Baker of Las Vegas, NV; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover on Sunday, November 13, 2022 from 5 to 7 p.m. A service celebrating Robert’s life will be held in the funeral home on Monday, November 14, 2022 beginning at 11 a.m. with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating, with additional visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Dover Burial Park where the New Philadelphia VFW Post #1445 will render military honors.

Memorial contributions in Robert’s memory may be directed to either the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.

Those unable to attend are invited to send the family personal condolences by signing the online guest registry located on the funeral home’s website.

Robert was a gentleman and a scholar. He was the best father and husband that anyone could have. He was the hardest working person I have ever seen in all my days. He was my assistant manager at Safeway and the best one ever. Besides working together he was a great friend. "God bless his wife Norma and his two wonderful children, Alan and Pam" Sincerely, Phil Less

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your dad, Pam. I was so glad that he and your mom were able to be near you in Ohio these past few years. I will keep your family in my prayers and ask the Lord for comfort during this difficult time.

Growing up in Vallejo CA, I had many sleep overs at Pam's house and Robert and Norma (Mr. & Mrs. C) we're like 2nd parents to me. Mr. C. was a positive and supportive person. He was fun to be around and a great roll model. I am fortunate to have known him. I will miss Robert (Mr. C.) but carry with me many fond memories.

I remember the grand end of summer party's at the Cheney house. We would pick the musk melons , light a bonfire for the vines and eat, drink and dance until late in evening. There were also some marathon monopoly games going on on the side. RIP Bobby.
