Nina Mae Sours, age 97, of Brightwood, died peacefully, Wednesday, June 15, 2022, while in the care of Schoenbrunn Health Care Center at New Philadelphia, following a brief period of declining health.
Born in Luray, Virginia on September 5, 1924, Nina was one of eight children born to the late Elmer and Grace (Miller) Sours. At the age of three, Nina’s family relocated to the Midvale area where she was a graduate of the former Midvale High School. In fact, she was the last surviving member of the Class of 1942.
Following graduation, Nina went to work in New Philadelphia for the former Belmont Stamping & Enameling Company and also worked as a waitress at the Brightwood Night Club for a handful of years prior to joining the staff of Miller’s Studio in New Philadelphia where she worked as a painter until her retirement in 1988.
While Nina never married or had children of her own, she loved the fact that she had a large family of nieces and nephews. She also, enjoyed her time as an Indian Valley North Booster and could be found for many years working in the concession stand at Kelly Field or attending other sporting activities. Nina also enjoyed attending the races at Midvale Speedway, taking bus trips and traveling with friends. She was a longtime member of the Midvale Club and in 2019 was crowned the Mine-ding Midvale History Queen. Her faith, however, was the most important aspect of her life as she was a lifelong member of the Midvale Methodist Church where she faithfully attended Sunday School and Worship services until her health would no longer allow her to get out of the house.
Nina is survived by her siblings, Elva Johnson of Dennison, Martha Hobart of New Philadelphia, and David Sours of Brightwood; her niece, Karen Schwartz, who was also her best friend and caregiver, and never shied away from sharing that she was proud of the fact that she had 154 nieces and nephews across five generations.
In addition to her parents, Nina was preceded in death by siblings, Benton Sours, Charles Sours, Frannie Day, and George Sours.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 20, 2022, at 10:00 AM in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. A memorial service celebrating Nina’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at 6:00 PM in the Midvale Methodist Church where a light reception will follow. The Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia is handling burial arrangements.
Memorial contributions in Nina’s name may be directed to the Midvale Methodist Church, PO Box 247, Midvale, Ohio 44653.

Nina was a loved member of the Sours family here in Luray. Always enjoyed visits from her and David. Also had the pleasure of visiting them in Ohio when I was little with my mom and dad, Bob and Alice Sours. Nina was a very special lady who loved keeping in touch with her Virginia family. We all remember her because she took interest in us and cared about what was going on in our lives. We will definitely miss her!!!
My deepest sympathy and prayers for the Sours family.
I'm so sorry about Nina she was a lovely person.
My condolences to Nina’s family. I’ve known Nina for literally decades. She was a steady customer of the former LaFrantz Beauty Shop, owned and operated by my Mom, Irene Pizzini, and Mom’s sister, Mary Conconi, until Mary’s passing in 1991, at which time the shop was closed. I have many happy memories of Nina, as I know her family and friends do also. Again, I’m sorry for your loss.
I will miss her smile and banter on the history of Barnhill and Midvale and sending condolences to Nina's brother Dave. Nina was the oldest member of our Church family but let us rejoice as she is now the youngest with the Lord in Heaven.......Amen to that --- Tony Daley
