Mark A. Smith, 66, of Gnadenhutten, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Aultman Hospital in Canton.

Born in Dennison, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Thelma (McKee) Smith and was a 1973 graduate of Claymont High School. He then furthered his education and earned his Associate Degree in Business Management, a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and his Master’s Degree in Business Management from Kent State University, Liberty University and Regent University, respectively. Mark worked while attending college to provide for his family but ultimately, he landed his “Dream Job” as Controller for Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union where he had worked for over 27 years, before his health forced him to retire.

Possessing a strong Christian faith was very important to Mark. As a member of Grace United Methodist Church at Uhrichsville, Mark served in a number of positions within the church from volunteer to trustee and teacher to preaching during Sunday Morning services. He loved reading his bible and could honestly say that he never missed a day in over 35 years.

Sports were also a big part of Mark’s life. From playing little league, high school and Class “A” baseball to college tennis, Mark excelled. He played fast pitch baseball well into his mid 40’s and won a number of championships in both baseball and tennis but his greatest achievement was being inducted into the Tuscarawas County Baseball Hall of Fame.

November 1, 1978 Mark married Carol S. “Sue” (Cromley) Smith and this year would have celebrated 43 years of marriage. Also surviving are his children and their spouses, Stephanie Smith (Patrick Custer) of New Philadelphia, Katie (Mark) Fleming of Westerville and Andrew (Lisa) Smith of Stow; two sisters, Marla Kasunic of Winter Haven, Florida and Elaine Carmany of New Philadelphia and six grandchildren, Drexel Fleming, Dean Fleming, Dezi Fleming, Evanna Smith, Isaac Smith and Lucas Smith.

In addition to his parents, a sister, Cheryl Swinderman and two brothers, David Smith and Jack Smith also precede him in death.

In keeping with Mark’s wishes, he is to be cremated through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and a private family service will be held at a later date.

To honor Mark, his family would like memorial contributions to be directed to Grace United Methodist Church, 534 West First Street, Uhrichsville, Ohio 44683.

Sorry to hear of your loss Sue. He was the most positive man I know. We would play basketball together and he was always encouraging me. I would go over to his house to study but always ended up playing ping-pong. RIP Mark…

Mark and I started kindergarten together and were in most classes together even throughout high school. We lived on the same street for a lot of our early elementary years and played together during those years. My heart hurts for you, Sue, children/families. God’s peace be with you.

As a child I lived just a few houses away from Mark’s family home. We played a lot of basketball in his driveway, and he called me Wilt, after Wilt Chamberlain. He was always very kind and a very good athlete. My deepest condolences to his family.

Mark was everything that we all wished we were. A man of religion, who lived it everyday. Probably the most competitive person I ever met. Come to think of it, that entire family was competitive.. His difficult decisions indicated how much he loved his family. He, like Dave, could be so serious when playing ball but turn that to an unforgettable smile when the situation warranted. I think of my walks down the hall to visit him when visiting my mom. He never complained or felt sorry for his situation. A trait that I so admired. Dave and Jack will be happy to see him..

Sue and family, I am so sorry for the loss of Mark. I have the best childhood memories of playing games with Mark and all the neighborhood gang between Parish and Water Streets. We had the best summers a kid could ask for.
