James R. Schaar, 38, passed away of natural causes during his sleep at his Goshen home in the early morning on Monday, May 27, 2002.

Jim was born at Twin City Hospital in Dennison on August 12, 1963 to Robert L. and Barbara J. Fellers Schaar and was a 1982 graduate of Indian Valley High School. On October 8, 1983, Jim married Pamela A. Maxwell at Sharon Moravian Church.

Jim’s long interest in heavy equipment led him to his life-long career in heavy machine operation. He had worked as foreman for the Costain Coal Co. in Gnadenhutten and was currently working for J & D Mining. Jim enjoyed his work, but most of all he loved spending time watching his sons participate in various sports activities, and going hunting with them. Jim was a member of the Indian Valley Athletic Booster Club.

In addition to his wife Pam, Jim is survived by his two sons, Matthew W. and Brian J. Schaar of the home; parents, Robert L. & Barbara J. Schaar of Goshen; sister, Sandy (Dan) Fait of New Philadelphia; brother, Steve Schaar of Goshen; nieces, Stacey & Daylenna Schaar, Christina & Danielle Fait and Courtney Garbrandt; and nephews, Bob Fait and Jason Garbrandt.

Jim was preceded in death by a brother, William Schaar; and grandparents, Walter & Rachel Schaar and Floyd & Kathryn Fellers.

Calling hours will be on Friday, May 31, 2002 from 3:30 to 5:30 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home. The funeral will be Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 10:00 AM in the funeral home with Pastor Brian G. Flood officiating. Burial will follow at Sharon Moravian Church Cemetery. Following the committal a meal will be shared in the church.

Contributions honoring Jim may be made to the Indian Valley Athletic Booster Club, P. O. Box 646, Gnadenhutten, OH 44629.

Bob & Barbara, Rick Grove called me last night and told me about Jim. I was stunned. I will always remember his quiet ways and easy humor. He was a good man. I think of all of the men of Costain often, it was quite a brotherhood, and one I was proud to have been a part of. Diane, Timothy, and I want to express our deepest sympathy to you and Jim's family.

I first knew Jim when I was around Brian's age. He was dating Pam, who was slightly older than Matt is now. My parents had recently divorced. Jim was always there for Pam during that hard time, and was always around when I got home from school. He drove an awesome black Monte Carlo that I scratched one time when I was scrapping ice off of it. In the sixth grade, I wrote an essay about Jim, but I misspelled his last name. One time I tried to run away from home, but Jim ran and caught me and took me back to my house. When I was a freshmen in high school, I went on vacation to Canada with Pam and Jim. Pam was pregnant with Matt back then. I caught a fish with Jim and it jumped when I was taking it off the hook. The hook went through my finger, so Jim rushed me back and he and Pam took me to the hospital to have it removed. It's funny now.... He was a good guy, and I will always remember those times. My love to Matt, Brian, and Pam. Jeff

I went to school with Jim, I remember him always smiling, he never said too much, but his smile said it all for him. He was kind, sweet and will be sadly missed by all that knew him. My heart goes out to Pam and his boys! I only wish there were words strong enough to somehow comfort you in a time such as this. Just know you're in my thoughts and in my prayers.

Dear Pam, Matt and Brian, Our hearts break for you during this terribly sad time. As are all of your friends, we are so deeply saddened by your sudden, tragic loss. Jim was a sweet, kind person who so dearly loved his family. Although he was a quiet man, it was evident in his beautiful smile how much pride he took in all of you. Cherish your memories, and he will be with you always. Love, the Ellwoods/Fellers Tim, Kathy, Joey Ellwood Courtney and Casey Fellers

I am deeply saddened by Jim's passing. As a former classmate, I remember him as quiet and shy, but always with a sparkle in his eye. He will be thought of fondly. I pray for his family. May the Lord wrap his arms around you and bring you peace for today and hope for tomorrow.
