George Elmer Sours, age 82, of New Philadelphia, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022, surrounded by his loving family, after a period of declining health.
Born on February 22, 1940 in his home in Goshen Township, Ohio, George was the son of the late Elmer and Grace (Miller) Sours.
George attended Midvale High School before he joined the US Army and honorably served his country. He was a truck driver for many years and a proud member of Teamsters Local Union 92. He retired from Baker Hi-way Express. Through those years of driving truck, he discovered many places that served “Good eats” and enjoyed sharing the information with anyone who might be traveling in the area of these establishments. After retiring he drove vans for S.E.A. for several years.
George was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching OSU football, Cleveland sports teams and especially Indian Valley sports. George never met a stranger and he was probably happiest just spending time with friends and families, drinking a cold beer and sharing stories.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and companion, Virginia “Ginger” Daniels; children, Lynette (Larry) Kopp of Midvale, Julie (Scott) Kerns of Tuscarawas and Alan Sours of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, “Grandpa’s Little Brats,” Brittany, Trevor, Joey, Kenadi, Kami and Brynli; and great-grandchildren, Brylie and Aaden; his siblings, Nina Sours, Elva Johnson, David Sours and twin sister, Martha Hobart; and many special friends, extended family members and former family members who remained friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Benton Sours, Charles Sours and Frannie Day.
The family will greet guests on Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 4 to 7 PM in Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Larry Malterer will lead a funeral service on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover with New Philadelphia VFW rendering military honors.
Memorial contributions in George’s name may be directed to Indian Valley Athletic Boosters, P.O. Box 664, Gnadenhutten, Ohio 44629.
