Donald L. Mencer, 90, of Dover, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2021 in his home following a period of declining health.
Born in Massillon, he was the son of the late John and Ruth (Baad) Mencer and a 1948 graduate of the former Beach City High School. In 1951, Donald was drafted in the United States Army and had served in Japan for almost two years attaining the rank of Staff Sargent before being honorably discharged in 1953.
After his discharge, he was employed by the former W. Bingham Wholesale Hardware Company in Cleveland, working as a traveling salesman in this area for six years until the company went out of business in 1959. Donald then began his employment with Timken Roller Bearing at Canton and eventually retired from there as a tool setter, after 34 years with the company.
Donald was a longtime member of Dover First Methodist Church; having attended for over 50 years. Other memberships include The Tuscarawas Senior Center, the $1.25 Andy Griffith Club and the Dover American Legion Post 205. His hobbies included fishing, playing cards and traveling but mostly he loved being with his family.
On February 27, 1955, Donald married his wife, Joyce M. (Cash) Mencer and together shared over 65 years of marriage before his passing. Also surviving are his four sons; Gregory Mencer of North Canton, Timothy Mencer of Massillon, Eric (Erica) Mencer of Bolivar and Michael Mencer of Murrieta, California; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his three brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert (Margaret) Cash, C. James (Jean) Sinfield and Charles (Janice) Sinfield.
